Hummer EV and Charger Owners Most Likely to Drink and Drive and Get into Accidents, but a Cheap Kia Stole the Headline

Who Leads the Anti-Ranking?

If we asked you to guess which electric vehicles most often get into accidents, receive speeding tickets, or cause penalties for drunk driving, you would probably name the GMC Hummer EV and Dodge Charger Daytona. According to a new study by the insurance comparison site Insurify, you would be absolutely right.

The Hummer EV tops the ranking with a rate of 7.5% for tickets, 8.3% for accidents, and an impressive 6.4% for drunk driving. The Charger Daytona EV follows closely with rates of 7.0%, 7.7%, and 5.4%, respectively. Considering that both electric vehicles have enormous power and a flashy character, none of these results came as a big surprise.

Unexpected Leaders Among Budget Models

What is more unexpected is who comes next. The Kia Soul EV takes third place with a rate of 7.1% for tickets, 6.5% for accidents, and 4.8% for drunk driving. The Chevrolet Bolt follows with rates of 4.8%, 4.6%, and 4.2%.

None of these cars are particularly fast or powerful. One possible explanation is demographics. Historically, both models have attracted younger and more budget-conscious buyers who, according to statistics, tend to engage in riskier driving behavior.

Interesting Exceptions and Surprises

A deeper analysis of the numbers reveals several interesting exceptions. The BMW i5 shows a relatively modest ticket rate of 4.6%, but has a high accident rate of 6.7%, one of the highest in the study. Meanwhile, the Chevrolet Blazer EV has 6.2% for tickets and 7.0% for accidents, suggesting that owners may enjoy using all the instant electric power.

Cybertruck: Not Exactly Exemplary

Surprised that the Tesla Cybertruck didn’t top the table? So were we, but it is far from exemplary. The angular pickup records a ticket rate of 4.9%, which is the same as the Model 3 and worse than other Teslas.

The Model 3 is actually more prone to accidents — 5.9% versus 5.4% for the Cybertruck. But Cybertruck owners are clearly not averse to drinking, as their drunk driving rate (1.4%) is much higher than any other Tesla product. Insurify data shows that Model 3, Model S, and Model X drivers have rates of only 0.4%, and Model Y owners even lower at 0.3%.

Interestingly, the lowest rates in all categories are shown by models such as the Chevrolet Silverado and Ford F-Series Pickup, which may indicate a more cautious driving style among owners of traditional pickup trucks. At the same time, the high DUI rates of the Hummer EV and Charger Daytona EV may be due not only to their power but also to the certain image of these vehicles, which attracts drivers prone to risky behavior. Insurify’s study highlights that the type of vehicle and its target audience play a key role in violation statistics, and even budget electric vehicles can have unexpectedly high rates due to demographic factors.
