Scale of the Problem
Dozens of owners report complete failure of the rear shock absorbers at mileages between 20 and 60 thousand miles. Complaints are being filed both on forums and with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Owners describe the problems as a sharp deterioration in ride comfort, uneven suspension performance, and fluid leaks from the shock absorbers.
The problem primarily affects top-tier versions with the self-leveling suspension system, which is designed to maintain the vehicle’s height regardless of load. However, this system is proving to be unreliable, especially after the warranty period expires.
Manufacturer’s Response
Hyundai has known about the problem for at least 3.5 years. In a technical bulletin, the company acknowledged a fault with the suspension’s isolation bushing causing a knocking noise, but the bulletin only covered 2020-2021 models. Owners of newer Palisades claim the issues remain relevant.
One owner of a 2023 model reported two replacements of the rear shock absorbers within 22 thousand miles. Hyundai representatives have not yet commented on the situation.
Due to the lack of a reliable solution from the manufacturer, many owners are considering options to replace the original suspension with simpler or aftermarket components.
This situation is particularly concerning as it affects relatively new premium-class vehicles. The absence of a final solution to the problem raises questions about the long-term reliability of these SUVs, especially after the warranty period expires. Some experts have already begun comparing this situation to other known cases of systemic problems in vehicles of various brands.
