Porsche will stop production of the gasoline Macan this summer as 10,130 electric cars outsold it

Porsche stops production of the gasoline Macan despite high demand

Porsche is preparing to stop production of the gasoline version of the Macan, even though demand for this model remains high. The situation is complicated by the fact that a replacement for the internal combustion engine is not expected before 2028, creating an awkward gap in one of the brand’s most important lineups.

“Production will be stopped in the summer of 2026, and during the last month we will produce as many as we can,” said Porsche Chief Financial Officer Jochen Breckner during a conference call on financial results. “Of course, our capacity is one of the factors, but it is not limited. The other problem is the supply of components,” he added.

This means production in Leipzig will end this summer, but sales will not stop immediately. Breckner noted that in some markets, deliveries of gasoline Macans could continue until 2027, although after the production stop, “a downward trend will begin.” Obviously, customers will not be able to order a car with individual specifications.

Electric Macan did not meet expectations

Initially, Porsche planned for the electric Macan to replace the gasoline version, and this seemed realistic. However, demand cooled, especially in the US after the cancellation of the $7,500 federal electric vehicle incentives last fall. In the first three months of this year, Porsche sold 8,079 units of the electric Macan, compared to 10,130 gasoline versions, despite the internal combustion engine no longer being available in Europe.

Breckner acknowledged that there is now “some pressure” on the electric Macan in the US, and the company understands the need to produce as many gasoline versions as possible for North American fans until production completely ceases. The CFO noted that demand for the gasoline model in America remains strong, and Porsche will send “as many gasoline Macans to the US as it can.”

Macan — the key to Porsche sales success

The Macan was not just another Porsche. For many years, it was one of the main drivers of the brand’s sales volumes, often doing the lion’s share of the work, while more expensive sports cars maintained the image. Losing this momentum, even temporarily, will not be painless.

New gasoline Macan already being tested

Porsche has already admitted that it misjudged the market. A new gasoline and hybrid version of the Macan is reportedly approved and will be based on the Audi Q5 platform, but it will not appear until 2028. This leaves roughly two years during which dealers must rely on remaining gasoline stocks, the electric Macan, and other models.

Financial results and prospects

The broader figures show why Porsche is concerned. Deliveries in the first quarter fell by nearly 15 percent, automotive business revenue decreased by 5.6 percent, and operating profit fell by 23.8 percent. Porsche still claims it prioritizes value over volume, especially in China, but fewer Macans that people actually want to buy will not make this task easier.

Thus, the gasoline Macan gets a farewell tour in the second half of this year. It’s just a pity that Porsche didn’t book an encore earlier.

The situation around the Macan demonstrates the complexity of the transition to electric vehicles for traditional automakers. Despite ambitious plans, real demand often does not match forecasts, forcing companies to seek compromises. For Porsche, this means not only a temporary loss of sales volumes but also the need to convince customers of the advantages of the electric version, which has not yet been able to fully replace the gasoline model. The decision to continue production of the gasoline Macan until the last moment reflects a pragmatic approach, but at the same time highlights the risks associated with abandoning proven technologies too quickly.
