Rare Accident Due to Tire Contact
Road incidents happen often, but they usually involve minor damage. However, a recent accident involving a Ford Mustang and a Jeep provided a unique opportunity to observe a much rarer phenomenon. It turned out that even slow tire-to-tire contact can cause real chaos in an instant. In this case, such contact literally tossed the Mustang into the air.
Chronology of Events
The recording shows a Ford Mustang accelerating before an intersection and moving from the second lane to the first. Approaching the intersection, the Mustang driver changes into the left turn lane. He did not notice that a Jeep, which started its maneuver from the far right lane as if exiting a business area and attempted to cross all traffic lanes, was about to occupy the same lane.
When the Jeep approached the left turn lane, the Mustang was already there. The cars began to converge, and the Jeep driver sharply turned the steering wheel to the right, trying to avoid a collision. Unfortunately for the Ford driver, contact still occurred, precisely on the tires.
The Role of Physics in the Accident
At the moment one tire “rides up” on another, the rotating mass of the wheel begins to act as an inclined ramp combined with a rotating lever. Instead of absorbing the impact, the Mustang’s suspension and wheel are sharply pushed upward, converting linear momentum into rotational force. This sudden thrust flips the car, and once the center of gravity passes a critical point, the vehicle can no longer return to its original position.
The force was so significant that you can see the tires on the left side of the Mustang compress and then rebound, tossing the car into the air during the rollover. The result is striking: the Mustang flies over the dividing strip and ends up roof-down in a fraction of a second. Meanwhile, the Jeep appears to have remained practically undamaged. This situation once again reminds us of the need for increased caution on the road.
This case clearly demonstrates how unpredictable the consequences of even minor contact on the road can be. The technical condition of the vehicles, speed, and angle of collision created perfect conditions for a catastrophic outcome for one of the participants. It is important to understand that a safe distance and attentiveness to the maneuvers of other drivers remain key factors that can prevent such situations, where the formal correctness of one driver’s actions does not guarantee protection from the mistakes of another.
