Modern electronic systems make life easier for drivers, but they are ready to rely completely on them. The study by the American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) showed that motorists do not trust lane-keeping and lane-keeping systems.
Moreover, there is more distrust specifically towards the lane-keeping technology, which steers the car. IIHS experts selected a focus group of drivers and had them test 20 different cars with this system. In particular, the study involved BMW 530i, Mercedes-Benz E300, Infiniti QX50, Tesla Model S, and Volvo S90.
Motorists noted that the lane-keeping system in almost all cars works too roughly and sometimes steers the car for no reason at all. Some test participants stated that, as drivers, they are generally offended by the fact that electronics obtrusively interfere with the process of driving the car. So developers have a lot of work to do to improve the technology.
