Drivers Want More Buttons, But the New AMG Super Sedan Gets Rid of Most of Them

Interior of the New Electric Vehicle

Mercedes-AMG has removed the covers from the interior of its upcoming electric super sedan. The next-generation AMG GT 4-Door Coupe is essentially the production version of last year’s AMG GT XX concept, aimed at competing with the Porsche Taycan and the growing number of high-performance EVs attempting to redefine the standards of a fast four-door car.

Unlike the symmetrical hyper-screen layouts used in the regular EQ lineup and the new S-Class, the AMG’s center console is tilted towards the driver. A 14-inch media display dominates the layout, angled sufficiently towards the driver to remind that this is a sports model. This screen works in tandem with a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, and an optional 14-inch panel is available for the passenger.

The manufacturer claims a “balanced” control logic that combines tactile buttons, touch input, and voice control. However, in practice, it seems AMG has not fully embraced the recent return of competitors to physical controls. The most obvious victim of this approach is the climate control system, which remains hidden within the menus of the MBUX infotainment system.

Signature AMG Details

Signature AMG details include air vent surrounds styled like jet engines with illumination, a steering wheel with a flattened bottom, carbon fiber inserts, and tactile feedback, optional AMG Performance sports seats, and a wing-shaped metal element stretching across the center console.

Three large round controls are also placed on the center tunnel. Apparently, even in the EV era, AMG still believes drivers should have something physical to operate.

These controls are directly linked to the car’s dynamics. Response Control adjusts the behavior of the electric motors and accelerator pedal, Agility Control configures cornering characteristics, and Traction Control offers nine levels of intervention via the new AMG Race Engineer system. The driver can also quickly access key functions using two buttons on the steering wheel, which have their own LCD displays.

Technological Features

One of the most impressive technological features is the panoramic Sky Control glass roof, which can switch between transparent and matte states. At night, it can also project AMG logos or racing stripes onto the glass, synchronized with the colors of the ambient interior lighting.

The front cabin received a small but noticeable improvement in practicality thanks to illuminated cup holders and two wireless charging pads. For rear passengers, Mercedes promises “generous legroom, pleasant headroom, and a naturally comfortable knee bend angle,” which should make longer journeys less tiring. The standard layout is for four people, although buyers will also be able to choose a five-seat configuration.

Expected Premiere

The full presentation of the new AMG GT 4-Door Coupe is expected this spring, with customer deliveries set to begin later this year. This high-performance EV will also be the first production model to use the dedicated AMG.EA platform from Mercedes-AMG, developed specifically for future electric sports cars.

The concept version had very serious technical specifications. It used three axial-flux motors with a combined output of 1,341 hp, as well as a synthesized V8 sound system. The battery pack also featured cooling technology borrowed from Formula 1 and ultra-fast charging capability, allowing for a 400-kilometer range to be replenished in just five minutes.

The revealed interior clearly demonstrates the balance Mercedes-AMG is trying to strike between modern technology and the brand’s traditional sporty feel. The driver-focused angled console and physical controls for driving dynamics indicate that performance remains a priority, even in a world where large screens are becoming the norm. This model’s success among enthusiasts will depend on how well the engineers have managed to integrate complex electronics without sacrificing the direct connection between driver and car, which has always been a defining characteristic of AMG vehicles.
