Problem with Excessive Oil Consumption in Ford F-150
Owners of Ford F-150 pickups with the 5.0-liter Coyote V8 engine are facing serious problems of excessive motor oil consumption, leading to reduced performance and potential long-term engine damage. A group of drivers from nine US states has filed a class action lawsuit in Michigan, claiming that the manufacturer knew about the defect but concealed it, failing to take measures to recall the vehicles.
Inaccuracy in the Manual and Oil Monitoring
The lawsuit states that the F-150 owner’s manual contains incorrect information regarding the volume of oil consumption and the frequency of its topping up. Furthermore, the oil life monitoring system, which is supposed to alert about the need for an oil change, can activate as early as 3000 miles (4800 km) after the previous service, which is significantly more frequent than expected.
Consequences of Oil Burning and Carbon Buildup
In addition to the inconvenience associated with frequent oil top-ups, there is a risk of oil entering the combustion chamber, where it burns instead of lubricating the engine. This not only worsens engine efficiency but also causes the formation of carbon deposits, which can damage the engine.
Concealment of the Problem by Ford
It is reported that Ford knew about the excessive oil consumption problem for a long time but did not inform customers and did not initiate a recall. Some dealers refused to repair engines even under warranty, adding grounds for accusations of intentional concealment of the defect.
Lawsuit Participants and Their Demands
The case involves 12 plaintiffs from Connecticut, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Kentucky, California, and Florida, who own 2018–2020 F-150s. They demand that Ford take responsibility for engines that consume oil at rates significantly higher than normal.
This situation could have serious consequences for Ford’s reputation, especially among pickup owners who rely on the reliability and durability of their vehicles. Excessive oil consumption not only increases maintenance costs but also creates safety risks, as reduced engine performance can affect handling and overall vehicle operation. If the allegations are confirmed, the company will likely have to not only financially compensate for damages but also review its quality control standards and transparency in customer communication.
