Martial law and cars with Euro plates crashed the new car market

Introduction of martial law and the unstable political situation in Ukraine, along with the uncertainties surrounding the so-called Euro cars significantly shook the new car market. Almost all dealers and importers are talking about it.

As shown by a small survey of new car sellers and trade-in platform managers, an already “dead” December in the first days has made it clear that the results of sales for the month may be among the worst in recent years. They associate this with martial law and customers’ fear, who decided to postpone the purchase.

However, November already frightened market participants since the sales results were worse than in November 2017, which was not the best either.

Sellers associate the failure in November with Euro-plate cars, saying that many were waiting for what the government would do. And it, we remind, quite unexpectedly adopted laws on the legalization of Euro-cars through preferential customs clearance in the first 3 months.

According to the “Ukravtoprom” association, new car registrations in Ukraine dropped by 4% to 7.3 thousand units. In total, since the beginning of the year, 74.8 thousand new passenger cars have received their first registration plates in Ukraine, which is 2% more than in the same period last year. But if December is worse than last year’s month, it’s possible that 2018 will turn out to be even worse than 2017, although importers assumed that at least this year the market would finally start to grow and not stagnate…
