Volkswagen announces updated Atlas
Volkswagen has hinted at a redesign of its popular Atlas crossover, which is the brand’s second best-selling vehicle in the United States. Despite the model’s importance, the announcement was quite restrained.
The official premiere of the updated Atlas is scheduled for the New York Auto Show in April 2026. The new model will look very similar to the Chinese Teramont Pro, introduced last year.
Exterior and Platform
The car will retain the wheelbase from the previous generation – 117.3 inches (2980 mm). According to Auto News, the roof will also remain the same, but all other body metal will be completely new.
Auto News also reports that the roof remains the same, although all other body metal is new.
The front end has received a large split radiator grille, flanked by LED headlights with C-shaped accents. Below, vertical air intakes and a wide lower grille with a diamond pattern can be seen.
The side profile is adorned with plastic body cladding and a clearly defined shoulder line. These are complemented by muscular fenders, streamlined body shapes, and a window line that rises smoothly upwards.
The rear is well camouflaged, but a spoiler and likely a light panel are visible. A streamlined bumper with a diamond-patterned grille on both sides of the tow hook is also noticeable.
Interior and Technical Features
Volkswagen did not show the interior, but the cabin may mirror its Chinese counterpart. In that case, the model will get a high-tech dashboard with a digital instrument cluster, a floating multimedia system, and a display for the front passenger.
The 2027 model year Atlas is expected to be built on the MQB Evo platform and receive a new EA888 evo5 engine. Although exact specifications are not disclosed, it is known to be a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine also used in the Tiguan.
The more powerful of the two versions of this engine develops 268 hp (200 kW) and 258 lb-ft (349 Nm) of torque. This version is most likely to be installed in the Atlas, although torque could increase to approximately 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) if the Teramont Pro is any indicator.

For comparison, the current Atlas is equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder EA888 evo4 engine that develops 269 hp (201 kW) and 273 lb-ft (370 Nm) of torque.
The presentation of the Atlas at the New York Auto Show will be an important event for Volkswagen in the American market, where the crossover holds a key position. The use of an already proven platform and an updated yet familiar powertrain may indicate the brand’s strategy to focus on the evolutionary improvement of a successful model rather than radical changes. The similarity to the Chinese version underscores the globalization of automakers’ model lines, where regional features are gradually being smoothed out in favor of a unified design.
