A new era for Volkswagen GTI
Volkswagen is preparing a revolution for its legendary GTI lineup. The company’s CEO, Thomas Schäfer, promises a whole series of new models with electric motors that are set to impress drivers with their performance. The first in this lineup will be the ID.2 GTI, followed by an electric version of the Golf GTI.
This will be the beginning of a whole group of GTI models
– Schäfer stated, hinting at the expansion of the electric lineup. He personally tested the prototypes and called them “stunning” in terms of handling.
What to expect from electric GTIs
Unlike the familiar gasoline versions, the new models will feature fully electric powertrains. The company emphasizes that the main focus is not just on power but on driving pleasure. Improvements in sound, handling, and design are expected to distinguish the electric versions from standard models.
Volkswagen’s Technical Director, Kai Grünitz, highlighted that the key aspect will be the “driver’s experience.” Although exact release dates are not specified, analysts suggest that the first electric GTI could debut in 2026 – coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the original Golf GTI.
The transition to electric for this iconic series is a bold move, but Volkswagen is confident it can preserve the spirit of the GTI. Given the success of previous generations and the growing demand for electric vehicles, this strategy could prove successful. Especially if the company manages to combine traditional dynamics with modern technology.
