Volkswagen Quietly Postpones Launch of Key Electric Vehicles Amid Plant Shutdowns

Reduction in Volkswagen Electric Vehicle Production

The automaker Volkswagen has announced a series of important changes to its electric vehicle strategy:

Changes in Production Capacity

Slowing sales growth for electric vehicles is forcing automakers to revise their plans. As reported by

Bloomberg

, the first step will be the shutdown of the plant in Emden, where the ID.4 and ID.7 models are produced. This site will be closed for several years, although the exact timeline has not yet been determined.

Temporary Production Stoppages

A company representative confirmed that production of the Audi Q4 e-tron will be halted for a week starting October 6th due to weak demand. Despite some advantages of this model, it lags behind Chinese competitors in terms of price-to-quality ratio.

Postponement of New Model Launches

Volkswagen is also postponing the launch of two key electric vehicles. The ID.Roc model, which was supposed to appear in the autumn of 2029, is now expected only in the summer of 2030. Similar changes apply to the long-awaited ID.Golf. These delays are related not only to falling demand but also to limited resources – the company has already cut costs by 15 billion euros in 2024.

Volkswagen’s recent decisions reflect broader trends in the electric vehicle market, where many manufacturers are facing the need to adapt to real demand after a period of excessive optimism. The transition to electric vehicles is proving more difficult than expected, forcing companies to seek a balance between innovation and financial stability.
