Volkswagen Outpaced Tesla by Launching Robotaxi into Series Production

Volkswagen Introduced the Autonomous Electric Vehicle ID. Buzz AD

The MOIA brand, owned by Volkswagen, has officially unveiled the series version of the autonomous electric vehicle ID. Buzz AD. This project has been in development for several years and will become the first step towards the implementation of autonomous electric vans in Europe and the USA. The model is equipped with autonomous driving technology from Mobileye and 27 sensors for enhanced safety.

The autonomous van is positioned as a ready-made solution for cities and companies that manage vehicle fleets. It features an extended wheelbase, a raised roof, and a smartphone-operated door opening system. The interior is equipped with four passenger seats, a wooden floor, and emergency call buttons.

Autonomous Driving Technologies

The ID. Buzz AD is equipped with 13 cameras, 9 lidars, and 5 radars, providing a complete overview of the surrounding space. It utilizes the Autonomous Driving Mobility as a Service (AD MaaS) platform from Mobileye. Volkswagen offers clients a comprehensive solution that includes technology, fleet management, and a booking system.

“Starting in 2026, we will begin the large-scale deployment of autonomous vehicles in Europe and the USA,” stated Volkswagen Group CEO Oliver Blume.

Despite the model having a driver’s seat and a hidden steering wheel, they can be dismantled during fully autonomous operation. The front passenger area is converted into a luggage compartment. The start of series production is expected in 2026 after obtaining the necessary permits.

This step by Volkswagen demonstrates the growing competition in the autonomous vehicle market. Unlike Tesla, which is focused on taxi services, MOIA concentrates on corporate clients and urban mobility. The technologies implemented in the ID. Buzz AD could become the foundation for future autonomous commercial solutions.
