VW denies information about stopping ID.Buzz deliveries to the US due to tariffs
Volkswagen has refuted rumors that the export of ID.Buzz electric vehicles to the US was suspended due to increased tariffs. Brand representatives stated that the delay was related to technical issues, not trade restrictions.
According to VW, hundreds of cars are already on their way to America after resolving a recall issue. In May, the company announced a recall of 5,644 electric vehicles due to the rear seat’s non-compliance with safety requirements. Regulators believed the seat’s width might encourage passengers to seat three people, even though the seat belts are designed for only two.
“This is not true. Volkswagen of America temporarily held the vehicles at the port of Emden while resolving issues related to the recall. The vehicles are now moving again, and several hundred are already on board,” a company representative stated.
Sales problems and market challenges
The ID.Buzz is facing difficulties in the American market. Despite optimistic sales forecasts of 40,000 units per year, only 564 cars were sold in the second quarter. High prices (starting from $61,545) and limited range (234 miles) make the model less attractive compared to competitors.
Some experts believe VW took too long to bring the model to market. Furthermore, the absence of an internal combustion engine or hybrid version for the American market may have also affected demand. The stylish design and retro aesthetics remain advantages of the Buzz, but they do not compensate for other shortcomings for the mass consumer.
The tariff situation for European automakers remains complex, and until the EU agrees on better terms with the US, companies have to account for additional costs. However, for VW, this was not the main reason for the temporary difficulties with the delivery of the electric minibus.
