Volvo begins production of XC60 in the USA
Volvo has confirmed plans to produce the XC60 model at its plant in South Carolina. Production is set to begin at the end of 2026, which will allow it to avoid high tariffs. Previous reports also indicated the possibility of the XC90 being produced at the same plant in the future.
The plant in Ridgeville, which already produces the EX90 and Polestar 3, is now preparing to launch the XC60. This model is the second most popular in the USA, with sales figures exceeding 21 thousand units in the first half of 2024, which is 22.9% more than last year. Production will include both mild hybrids and fully electric versions.
“Adding the XC60 to our production line in Charleston will strengthen its position in the competitive US market and create new jobs,” stated Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson.
The decision to produce the XC60 locally underscores the company’s strategy of ‘producing where we sell.’ President of Volvo Cars Americas, Luis Resende, added that this model is perfectly suited for the American market and has already won the love of customers.
Although precise details regarding XC90 production remain unknown, a possible start in 2028 was previously reported. The potential release of an electric sedan, the ES90, is also being discussed, but there are no official confirmations yet.
This move by Volvo comes against the backdrop of the brand’s 70th anniversary celebration in the USA, where over 5 million cars have already been sold. Localizing production will allow the company to reduce costs and increase competitiveness in one of its key markets.
