Volvo XC70 Returns as a Hybrid, But Only for the Chinese Market

Volvo is preparing to introduce a new model in its lineup, which, however, will not be fully electric. It is a plug-in hybrid SUV called the XC70, the first images of which have already been released. Initially, the car is being developed for the Chinese market, but it may appear in other countries in the future.

The manufacturer positions the XC70 as its first plug-in hybrid with an extended range, although the company has used similar technologies before. Detailed technical specifications are not yet available, but Volvo claims the ability to cover up to 200 km without using the internal combustion engine (ICE). It is important to note that these figures were obtained using the optimistic CLTC cycle, so the real-world range will be lower.

The basis for the XC70 is the modular SMA platform, which, according to the manufacturer, supports fast charging functionality.

Like its predecessor, the new model continues the tradition of a versatile family car ready for any adventure. It offers more space than the XC60, and its design hints at features from other brand models—from the electric EX90 to the classic ICE-powered XC90.

The front is adorned with characteristic Thor’s Hammer-shaped LED headlights and a massive radiator grille with active shutters. The profile looks more streamlined due to the slanted rear window, and the rear lights are integrated into the glass and have a C-shaped form.

“The XC70 is our strategic step in the extended-range plug-in hybrid segment, which will serve as an intermediate link towards full electrification,” stated Volvo President Håkan Samuelsson. “This allows us to maintain a balanced model range, offering an attractive alternative to customers who are not yet ready for electric vehicles. Furthermore, we are demonstrating an approach to product localization that considers the needs of regional markets.”

The company promises to reveal additional details about the new product in the coming months.
