Volvo sued over sudden uncontrolled acceleration of electric vehicle

Volvo in difficult situation due to problems with electric XC40 Recharge

Volvo faces a class action lawsuit over allegedly dangerous defects in the electric XC40 Recharge crossover. According to plaintiffs, the vehicle may suddenly accelerate or move jerkily at low speeds, particularly when shifting gears or using One Pedal Drive mode. Over 100 owners have already joined the lawsuit, claiming that Volvo knew about these problems but did not take proper measures.

The lead plaintiff, Robert M. Becker, who leased an XC40 Recharge in 2024, states that he experienced unexpected accelerations during normal operation. He claims these defects pose a serious safety threat and accuses Volvo of concealing the issues. The lawsuit also mentions two previous recalls that, according to the plaintiffs, did not address the fundamental flaws.

Why this is important

This case could have serious consequences for Volvo’s reputation, as the company actively promotes its electric vehicle lineup. If the allegations are confirmed, the company will not only have to pay compensation but also reconsider its safety standards. At the same time, the incident raises questions about how ready manufacturers are for the mass transition to electric vehicles, especially when it comes to complex control systems.
