They Refused $103 Thousand for This 25-Year-Old Acura Integra Type R

It’s always fascinating to observe how high-performance cars from the 1990s-2000s surpass the price of the latest luxury models with more powerful engines, advanced electronics, and comfort. The DC2 Integra Type R is precisely such a case; it is considered one of the best front-wheel-drive models for handling and embodies the golden era of the Japanese auto industry. Because of this, examples with minimal mileage have skyrocketed in value in recent years.

At the beginning of the week, one such 2000 Integra Type R was put up for auction. The bid reached $102,989, but this turned out to be insufficient for the seller.

For comparison: a new Honda Civic Type R in the USA starts at $47 thousand, and a Lexus LC 500 with a V8 starts at $101,100. This 25-year-old Integra doesn’t have double the power compared to modern Hondas, but it is significantly rarer and carries a nostalgic value unattainable for new models. Its mileage is only 10 thousand miles (16 thousand kilometers), and it has also received a number of refined modifications.

A Rare Specimen with Minimal Changes

The most expensive DC2R sold at auction was a yellow example with 7 thousand miles (11,200 km) on it. This happened at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2022. The black Integra, painted Flamenco Black Pearl, has been owned by a dealer since 2014, has a clean history from Iowa, and comes with a corresponding Carfax report.

Among the enhancements are 16-inch Mugen alloy wheels. The previous owner installed A’Pexi WS coilovers and Mugen stabilizers front and rear. The braking system has also been updated. Changes also affected the powertrain.

Under the hood remains the legendary 1.8-liter B18 engine, but now with Mugen manifolds, a new exhaust system, an aluminum radiator, Spoon Sports hoses, an updated valve cover, and an ARC air intake. Importantly, the car has retained its original manual transmission.

Minor changes were made to the interior. Recaro seats from a Japanese Integra Type R and new lightweight alloy pedals were installed. Although the interior lacks modern amenities, this only enhances the driving experience.

Is this low-mileage Integra Type R with minor tuning really worth more than twice the price of a new Civic Type R? Or is it just nostalgia and love for clean engine bays? Share your thoughts.
