Rare Aston Martin and Zagato are being put up for auction
In 2019, Aston Martin, in collaboration with the famous Italian atelier Zagato, presented an ultra-exclusive duo: a replica of the 1963 DB4 GT Zagato and the modern DBS GT Zagato. Only 19 sets were manufactured, and it was only possible to buy both cars together.
The price for a set was £6.1 million (approximately $7.8 million at the time). Despite the high cost, all examples were quickly sold out, and most likely ended up in private collections. Now one of the sets will appear on the market again.
Significant loss of value
Next month, during Monterey Car Week, Broad Arrow Auctions will put one of the original duos up for sale. The auctioneer’s estimate is significantly lower than the initial price – from $3.5 to $4.5 million for both cars.
The DB4 GT Continuation is painted in Caribbean Pearl with a body made of 1.2 mm thick hand-formed aluminum. This left-hand drive car is equipped with a 4.7-liter naturally aspirated engine producing 390 hp and a 4-speed manual gearbox. Initially, the model was created as a track car, but this example is registered in Florida and has only 63 miles on the odometer.
The second car in the set is the DBS GT Zagato based on the DBS Superleggera. Its 5.2-liter biturbo V12 produces 760 hp (45 hp more than the standard version). The car is painted in the same Caribbean Pearl, with a Dark Knight leather interior, and silver wings and a roof made of carbon fiber.
Collector value in question
Buyers likely expected these cars to become investment objects, but the significant reduction in estimate suggests otherwise. Perhaps the initial price of $8 million was too optimistic.
This case shows that even the most exclusive cars do not always retain their value. This is especially true for modern limited series, where demand is often artificially created. At the same time, for true enthusiasts of the brand, these models remain exemplars of design and engineering.
