VW Polo celebrates its 50th anniversary with a miniature freight train

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the first showcase, and Volkswagen is celebrating the legacy of its iconic supermini with a fine send-off: a miniature car transporter, executed in 1:87 scale and fully loaded with Polo models. This exhibition is part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the original Polo’s debut. The current sixth-generation supermini will receive extensive updates in 2025. The miniature transporter with 70 Polo models is being showcased for the first time at the Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg. This department is known for its miniature exhibits, including ultra-realistic buildings, cars, trucks, trains, planes, boats, and much more, making it a popular destination for visitors.

It has 12 wagons, each containing all 70 models in different colors. Most of them belong to the fifth generation, which was sold between 2009 and 2017, but there is also a blue specimen from the first generation in 1975. The absence of the latest generation is likely due to the limited availability of 1:87 scale models. The train travels through the miniature “City of Hamburg” section, which includes scaled-down landmarks such as the Elbphilharmonie concert hall, bridges over the Elbe River, and the port. To mark the occasion, the train stations are decorated with festive “50 Years of Polo” signs.

Polo has been on sale for half a century, making it one of the oldest names in the supermini segment and one of the most recognizable Volkswagens alongside the Golf and Passat. It has released six generations, debuting in 1975, 1981, 1994, 2001, 2009, and 2017 respectively, with cumulative sales of over 20 million cars. Volkswagen confirms that the Polo will receive a mid-cycle update in 2025, which is the second facelift of the sixth generation after the 2021 update. This will ensure compliance with the stringent Euro 7 emissions requirements, securing the Polo’s future in the Old World—at least for the next few years. The ICE-powered supermini will be sold alongside the ID.1 and ID.2 models when they arrive in 2026 and 2027, respectively.
