You haven’t seen a Mazda Miata go this wild and beg for more

Modified Mazda MX-5 for off-road

The Mazda MX-5 has always been a versatile car that performs well both on city roads and the track. However, engineers probably never imagined that this model would someday venture off-road. Yet this particular example, listed for auction, is capable of such feats.

Although the car retains rear-wheel drive, it has undergone serious modifications: increased ground clearance, 31-inch BF Goodrich tires, and special AFCO Racing shock absorbers. Additional protection is provided by Zerek Fabrication bumpers, armored underbody, and a Hard Dog roll cage.

Technical features

The weight of the large wheels could have significantly reduced performance, so this Mazda MX-5 was fitted with a Flyin’ Miata turbocharger and a six-speed transmission from a 2004 model. Interestingly, the interior remains almost untouched—with standard leather seats and floor mats, making the ride more comfortable.

This project is one of the best examples of repurposing an MX-5 for off-road use. While this approach may not appeal to everyone, it certainly looks interesting and aligns with modern trends, as seen with the Porsche 911 Dakar. It’s worth noting that this Mazda will cost significantly less than premium-brand alternatives.

Projects like this demonstrate just how flexible a classic sports platform can be. Even though the Mazda MX-5 was never designed for extreme conditions, it can adapt to new challenges thanks to creative thinking and technical upgrades.
