You’ve Never Seen a Toyota Roof Do This Before

A Rare Japanese Coupe with a Removable Roof

Collectors of Japanese retro cars have received a unique chance to acquire an exclusive 1989 Toyota Soarer 3.0 GT Aerocabin model. This coupe appeared at an auction in the USA, although it was initially intended exclusively for the domestic Japanese market.

Externally, the Soarer Aerocabin might seem like an ordinary executive coupe from the era of the Japanese economic boom. However, its main feature is an electric drive mechanism that allows the car to be transformed into a pseudo-convertible in a matter of seconds. The roof and rear window retract into a special compartment, leaving only a stylish silhouette.

“What is most impressive is how neatly the entire construction is executed,” experts note.

Technical Features

Under the hood lies a turbocharged 3.0-liter 7M-GTE engine, which produced 237 hp — an impressive figure for the late 1980s. Although this unit did not become as iconic as the subsequent JZ series engines, it provided the smooth and comfortable ride characteristic of a Gran Turismo.

The interior is adorned with a digital instrument panel, automatic climate control, and leather seats. Due to the specific roof construction, the rear row of seats had to be removed — the Aerocabin became a two-seater.

This particular specimen requires restoration of the leather trim and replacement of non-original parts, such as the suspension and exhaust system. However, its rarity and historical value make it a true find for collectors. Given that only a few such cars made it to North America, its appearance at auction is a genuine event.
