Xpeng Expands Its Electric Vehicle Lineup with Hybrid Technologies
Xpeng became known in the Chinese market for its battery electric vehicles, but even this company has realized it cannot ignore the demand for hybrids. Therefore, it is working on integrating extended-range hybrid powertrains into several popular models, and one of the first will be a modified version of the X9, which was initially introduced several years ago as fully electric.
Platform Technical Features
The foundation of the new X9 EREV is Xpeng’s SEPA 3.0 platform, also known as Kunpeng AI. This architecture allows for the integration of a range extender system into an existing electric vehicle without the need to develop from scratch. In the case of the X9 EREV, it will be equipped with a 63.3 kWh battery pack. This is one of the largest batteries among hybrid models, second only to the optional 70 kWh unit in the new Zeekr 9X plug-in hybrid.
Range and Performance
Data submitted to China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) shows that the X9 EREV will have an all-electric range of 280 miles (450 km) according to the CLTC cycle. A 1.5-liter turbocharged engine with 148 horsepower will work in conjunction with the battery. Overall, the X9 EREV will be able to cover up to 994 miles (1600 km) without refueling or recharging.
This figure is particularly impressive considering that the X9 weighs 2750 kg (6062 lbs) and has dimensions: length 5316 mm (209.2 inches), width 1988 mm (78.2 inches), and height 1785 mm (70.2 inches), making it slightly larger than the all-electric version. The power output of the minivan’s electric motor has not yet been disclosed, so the combined power and torque figures along with the 1.5-liter engine remain unknown.
Testing in Extreme Conditions
Recently published images by Xpeng of the X9 EREV show it being tested in some of the country’s harshest conditions, including sandy deserts where most owners are unlikely to venture. Xpeng states that the vehicle has undergone testing in 19 other countries and 330 cities worldwide, ensuring its readiness for series production.
Information on price and availability will be announced closer to the model’s launch in the fourth quarter of this year.
The growing popularity of hybrid technologies among Chinese manufacturers indicates a shift in market preferences, where consumers are increasingly seeking a balance between environmental friendliness and practicality. The long range of the X9 EREV could become a key advantage for long trips, especially in regions with limited charging infrastructure.
