Unlike Italian car manufacturers, Japanese brands are not associated with impressive car design. They are more reliable, but, with the exception of models like the Mazda RX-7 FD or Lexus LFA, they are not particularly attractive. Subaru also has several cars that people don’t buy because of their appearance, but which one is the most unsuccessful?
At the New York Auto Show, Subaru introduced the new 2026 Outback model, and the internet’s reaction was quite sharp. In the comments to our publication, many were very critical, comparing the car to Clark Griswold’s Wagon Queen Family Truckster from the movie “National Lampoon’s Vacation”.
But is it really the least attractive model in history? The Outback has serious competitors in this regard, as there have been other cars with questionable design in the Subaru lineup.
Subaru Outback Wilderness 2026
The regular version of the new model is not particularly harmonious either, but the off-road Wilderness version received the most criticism. Its front end looks even less successful.
Subaru XT 1985–1991
Although the 1980s are back in fashion, and “bug-eye” headlights always look stylish, the front of the XT resembles a Toyota MR2 or Honda Prelude. But then the design starts to raise questions. The low window line might suit sports models, but it looks strange here, breaking the proportions. And the rear end with its large overhang and narrow track looks just awful.
Subaru Tribeca 2006–2014
This model was Subaru’s attempt to enter the premium segment. The Tribeca’s appearance resembled a Kia Amanti with a fake mustache, which is why it didn’t find many fans. After the facelift, it became similar to a Chrysler Voyager. Interestingly, over time, the original design started to look not so bad—perhaps due to nostalgia or changing tastes with age.
Subaru Impreza Casa Blanca
In the early 2000s, retro design was at its peak, and Subaru decided to create its own version. The result was a 1999 concept inspired by 1960s British sedans, which looked even worse than the 2001 Impreza with its round headlights, which also caused controversy.
These are far from all of Subaru’s unsuccessful models. It’s also worth mentioning the Baja and the cute but ugly 360. And although the new 2025 Impreza was also criticized, compare it to its predecessor—and it becomes clear that the old version was a real disaster.
Which Subaru model do you think is the least attractive? Perhaps you know some forgotten variant that deserves a place in the “hall of fame” of ugly cars? Share your thoughts in the comments—a friendly discussion won’t hurt anyone. Unless it upsets the owners of these cars. But we don’t feel too sorry—unless, of course, you are a lawyer and are planning to sue us.
