EU may allow use of Tesla’s autopilot to avoid imposition of customs duties

EU may change rules for autonomous vehicles

The European Union is considering the possibility of changing regulations for autonomous driving, which could be a retreat from strict standards. This step is aimed at reducing trade tensions with the US and simplifying the market entry of semi-autonomous systems.

Currently, the EU uses certification through independent testing, but new rules may allow manufacturers to self-certify the compliance of technologies, as is done in America.

Reaction of automakers

German companies such as BMW, Volkswagen, and Mercedes-Benz are actively pressuring the EU due to falling sales in the US. Discussions about the changes took place during a video conference with the leadership of these companies.

This would be a sharp change in policy, as the EU had previously insisted on strict standards, which even led to the collapse of a trade deal with the US

Tesla’s problems in Europe

Tesla’s autonomous driving systems in the EU are limited due to local regulations. Unlike in the US, where the feature is available almost everywhere, in Europe it only works on divided roads without pedestrians and cyclists.

Even if changes do not occur, Tesla has production in Europe, which allows it to respond more softly to local restrictions. A potential easing of rules could significantly expand the capabilities of automakers in the region.
