For $100,000, This Porsche Tries to Pass Itself Off as a Carrera GT

An eBay auction is selling a Porsche Carrera GT replica, built on a first-generation Boxster S base, for $100,000. The car is located in Florida.

In the 2000s, the Carrera GT was the undisputed flagship of Porsche, competing with the Ferrari Enzo. In contrast, the Boxster remained an affordable roadster, far from a supercar. However, someone decided to transform the humble Boxster into an imitation Carrera GT, putting it up for sale for a substantial $100,000.

This replica is built on a 2000 Boxster base, but the body has been completely reworked. The length was increased by 30 cm, and the wheelbase was widened to bring the proportions closer to those of the real supercar.

However, the result looks as if the craftsman was guided only by approximate descriptions of the original. The headlights (especially the rear ones), bumpers, side air intakes, and removable hardtop look rather unsuccessful.

On the other hand, the rear features a characteristic sculpted hood with an adjustable spoiler, as well as specially made door mirrors. The biggest flaw is the chrome wheels, which look cheap and don’t match the Porsche style. But at least the tires are new – no need to worry about replacing them.

The interior gives away the car’s origin – the dashboard and seats remain from the Boxster. Although the characteristic high center console of the Carrera GT is missing, the interior is adorned with leather upholstery, metal trim, and a ‘Carrera’ inscription on the floor mats. An added bonus is a new air conditioning system, which, according to the seller, works perfectly.

The replica received no performance enhancements. Under the hood remains the 3.2-liter six-cylinder engine from the Boxster S, producing 254 hp, which is significantly less than the 5.7-liter V10 of the original with its 603 hp. The only plus is the six-speed manual transmission. The chassis is also largely unchanged, except for the hydraulic suspension that lowers the ride height for a more aggressive look.

The seller emphasizes that real Carrera GTs cost over a million, so this copy is a cost-effective option. But $100,000 for a 25-year-old Boxster, even with numerous modifications, is excessive. For those interested: the car is located in Florida, USA.

This is not the first attempt to replicate the Carrera GT. Previously, similar replicas were often based on the Pontiac Fiero, and they cost much less. For comparison, a photo of the original Porsche Carrera GT is provided below.
