For $2,995, the Ram 1500 Big Horn Transforms into an Off-Roader for Mountainous Terrain

Ram has introduced a new version of its pickup truck – the 1500 BackCountry. This model occupies a middle ground between the existing Rebel and Warlock variants and is aimed at buyers who value off-road capabilities.

Key Features of the New Model

Technical Equipment and Design

Based on the Big Horn 4×4 Crew Cab, the BackCountry fully lives up to its name. Its equipment includes not only increased ground clearance but also underbody protection with armored panels, as well as an electronic locking rear differential. Added to this list are upgraded shock absorbers, front tow hooks, and 18-inch Satin Black wheels shod in 32-inch off-road tires. A notable feature is the Selec‑Speed off-road cruise control system, which allows the driver to focus on obstacles and terrain.

In addition to technical improvements, the vehicle’s design received additional body-colored accents and a matching grille. These are contrastingly complemented by black fender flares, bumpers, and lower body sections painted in Diamond Black Crystal Pearl-Coat. The dark theme is emphasized by details such as Satin Black emblems and headlight bezels.

Interior and Comfort

Changes to the interior are more modest, but it’s worth noting the black vinyl seats with “printed alloy mesh” inserts. The front seatbacks feature a MOLLE modular storage system. Other interior features include all-weather floor mats and a branded BackCountry emblem on the passenger-side dashboard. The design is also enhanced by stylish contrasting stitching in silver or white.

Engine Options and Price

The BackCountry package costs $2,995 and is available for 1500 Big Horn trims with Level 1 or Level 2 equipment. It is offered with two engine options: a 5.7-liter gasoline Hemi V8 or a bi-turbo 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine. The former produces 395 hp and 555 Nm of torque, while the latter produces 420 hp and 623 Nm.

Despite a fairly high starting price, the model offers many standard comfort options. Base equipment includes heated front seats and steering wheel, as well as an 8.4-inch multimedia system. Adaptive cruise control, a power rear window, and a universal garage door opener are also expected to be included in the equipment list.

The arrival of the Ram 1500 BackCountry clearly indicates growing competition in the mid-level off-road pickup segment. The manufacturer is trying to fill the niche between utilitarian and luxury versions, offering a balanced set of off-road attributes at a relatively affordable package price. The success of this model may largely depend on how well the market perceives it as a standalone offering, not just as an additional option to the existing lineup. This also demonstrates the general trend among automakers to differentiate model lines by offering more and more specialized versions for specific buyer groups.
