For $49,995, you could previously buy a Dodge Durango with 360 horsepower, but now — with 475

Dodge continues to develop its Durango model, which has been on the market for almost 15 years, by introducing an updated, more powerful version. Here are the key points about the new model:

New Powertrain and Positioning

The new version is called the Durango R/T 392 Launch Edition. It is equipped with a significantly more powerful 6.4-liter Hemi V8 engine instead of the 5.7-liter unit that was in the previous R/T model. This modification occupies the niche between the GT Plus AWD Hemi version and the powerful SRT Hellcat, effectively replacing the old R/T model.

This makes the Durango R/T 392 the most powerful offering in its segment priced below $50,000.

Technical Specifications and Performance

The new engine produces 475 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. This represents a 32% increase in power and a 21% increase in torque compared to its predecessor. The vehicle also has the best-in-class maximum towing capacity – 8,700 pounds.

Power is delivered to all four wheels via an eight-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission. The Launch Edition package also includes adaptive suspension, a high-performance Brembo braking system, a sport exhaust system, and SRT Performance drive modes.

Thanks to the increased power, the Durango R/T 392 accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds, which is much faster than the previous 6.2 seconds. It covers a quarter-mile in 12.9 seconds, and the top speed is 160 mph. For a large three-row SUV, these are impressive figures.

Exterior Appearance and Options

Exterior changes are minimal. The car can be recognized by its silver R/T 392 badges and an updated rear spoiler. Standard 20-inch alloy wheels are finished in Satin Carbon, and red brake calipers add accents.

For those who want a more aggressive look, an optional Blacktop Package is offered with Lights Out wheels, glossy black badges, and Eclipse Black exhaust tips. A choice of racing stripes in various colors and a new Green Machine paint for the entire Durango lineup are also available.

Interior and Trim Levels

The interior of the Launch Edition version features Nappa leather and Alcantara upholstery, SRT seats with heating and ventilation, as well as heated second-row captain’s chairs.

The Launch Edition Premium package includes carbon fiber trim, additional leather on the dashboard and doors, Alcantara headliner, a sunroof, an 18-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, upgraded brakes, a full suite of driver assistance systems, and a towing package.

Pricing Policy

The base price for the Durango R/T 392 Launch Edition is $49,995, which is exactly the same amount as for the previous R/T model with an engine that was 115 hp weaker. This is $6,320 more expensive than the GT Hemi AWD version.

The Launch Edition Premium package starts at $57,595, which is $22,400 cheaper than the SRT Hellcat. Such a pricing strategy makes this model an interesting proposition that combines high performance and relative affordability in its class.

The introduction of the Durango R/T 392 indicates that Dodge continues to bet on powerful engines and emotional appeal even for large family vehicles. Market conditions, where customers are increasingly choosing electric vehicles or hybrids, make such a move quite bold. Maintaining the previous price while significantly increasing power is an obvious attempt to attract brand enthusiasts who value traditional American V8s but also pay attention to cost. The success of this model will show whether demand for such cars remains sufficiently large in an era where the main development vector is electrification.
