Someone Paid the Price of a New Porsche 911 for a 1992 Mustang Still in Factory Wrap

A Museum Piece on the Market

It’s rare for a nearly museum-quality 1992 Ford Mustang 5.0 LX in a notchback body to appear for sale, but one such specimen was recently listed. This exceptionally well-preserved car, which is still protected by factory films and painted in a rich green color, was presented by a dealer from Sewell, New Jersey.

The car looks flawless on the outside, but the asking price might make even the most devoted Mustang fans double-check if they read it correctly.

Historic Price and Modern Equivalents

As seen on the window sticker, when this V8 muscle car left the showrooms in 1992, its price was $16,274, including options and delivery. Adjusted for inflation, that’s about $37,600 today—almost the same as a new Mustang EcoBoost Premium costs.

Dealer NJ Truck King is asking an impressive $149,000, which is $17,000 more than a new Porsche Carrera costs. Can a Fox-body justify such an amount? Technically yes, because value is always determined by what someone is willing to pay. But for many, this seems excessive.

The Value of Low Mileage

The main advantage of this Mustang is that it has only traveled 131 miles since its release. This is likely one of the least used notchbacks of this era in the US, and the green paint looks simply amazing. No external damage is visible either.

Unfortunately, the dealer did not publish many photos or details about the car, apart from those in short videos. The original sticker is still attached to the passenger window, and the seats are protected by film. If the interior is the same as the exterior, it should look almost new.

According to the seller, the car has the original keys, owner’s manual, and documents. However, it is not mentioned how it runs or how it was maintained all these years.

Although the mileage is very low, engines don’t like to sit unused for long periods. If this happened with this Mustang, the future owner should carefully inspect the engine, replace all fluids, and possibly replace the rubber hoses as well.

As for the powertrain, the LX is equipped with a 5.0-liter V8 that produces 225 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 5-speed manual transmission that drives the rear wheels.

Market Value of Similar Cars

A quick market review shows that similar Fox-body Mustangs typically sell for amounts between $20,000 and $40,000.

Most of these cars have significant mileage, so finding such a pristine specimen is a rarity. However, $149,000 seems detached from reality even for a sample in this condition.

Quick Sale

Despite such considerations, the car didn’t stay on the market for long. The dealer confirmed it was sold this week, which once again proves that nostalgia has no price ceiling. Somewhere out there, a collector decided that owning a perfectly preserved piece of early 90s American history is worth spending a fortune on.

This deal highlights how much priorities have changed in the collector car market. Ten years ago, such a price would have seemed fantastic, but today, rare, original cars with minimal mileage are increasingly becoming investment objects. Their value is determined not only by technical specifications but also by history, condition, and the emotional attachment of buyers. In the case of the 1992 Mustang, we see how nostalgia for the era of muscle cars translates into specific financial decisions.
