New electric SUVs from Toyota in the USA
Japanese automaker Toyota plans to start production of two new three-row electric SUVs at its Kentucky plant. One of them is likely to be inspired by the Land Cruiser, and the other will be an electric version of the RAV4 aimed at a family audience.
Changes in production strategies
At the same time, Toyota is moving the production of the next-generation Lexus ES from the US back to Japan. This decision, which the company first announced back in 2021, may be related to decreased demand for sedans and the growing popularity of crossovers and SUVs. Production of the Lexus TX will remain in Indiana, where an increase in Grand Highlander output is also planned.
Electric models and their potential
Sources close to the situation report that the new electric SUVs will be based on the Land Cruiser and RAV4 models. The Land Cruiser Se concept, introduced in 2023, indicates the possibility of creating a three-row electric version of this off-roader. Another candidate is a compact SUV often referred to as the FJ Cruiser, but it is unlikely to be suitable for three rows.
Importance of the RAV4 EV for the market
An electric version of the RAV4 could become a key element of Toyota’s strategy, as the RAV4 is one of the most popular cars in the US. A family electric SUV associated with this name could significantly strengthen the brand’s electric lineup, which failed to achieve success with the bZ4X model.
The future of Toyota’s electric models
Questions of tariffs and changes in market preferences may influence Toyota’s future decisions. However, the focus on SUVs and electric vehicles reflects the overall trends in the automotive industry. The success of the electric versions of the RAV4 and Land Cruiser could determine the future of the company’s electric strategy in North America.
These plans demonstrate how manufacturers are adapting to global changes, including the growing demand for electric cars and SUVs. Production in the US allows Toyota to avoid additional duties and ensure local production for key markets. In the future, we can expect further expansion of the electric lineup, especially in the family car segment.
