Forget the Cord: Electric Porsche Cayenne Supports Wireless Charging

New Electric Cayenne with Wireless Charging

The new electric version of the Porsche Cayenne will receive an option for inductive charging with a capacity of up to 11 kW. The manufacturer has not yet disclosed the price of this option, but it will debut in Europe next year and then become available in other markets.

Convenience for Owners

Do you find plugging your electric vehicle into a charger at home too complicated? Porsche offers a solution: the future all-electric Cayenne will be equipped with an optional inductive charging platform, allowing you to avoid using cords. Of course, this only applies to home charging, as public charging stations will still require cables.

Technology and Competition

Porsche is not the only manufacturer investing in wireless charging. For example, the upcoming Tesla Cybercab will also support inductive charging, and the hybrid McLaren Speedtail already had a similar feature. In the case of the electric Cayenne, the receiver is located between the front wheels and provides a charging speed of up to 11 kW.

How the System Works

The charging platform contains all the necessary components to initiate the process, but it itself is connected by a cable. Charging happens simply: just position the car over the platform. After that, the pneumatic suspension automatically lowers, reducing the distance between the charging devices to 4–6 inches. A surround-view function will help the driver position the car correctly.

Speed and Monitoring

Porsche does not specify how long a full charge will take via the wireless system, but 11 kW is the standard for home chargers, which is quite sufficient for overnight charging. All charging sessions are recorded via the My Porsche app.

Presentation and Design

The manufacturer presented the new system at the IAA Mobility exhibition in Munich along with a camouflaged prototype of the electric Cayenne. The car features a bright fluorescent paint job with five shades that glow in different colors when electrified.

Wireless charging could become an important step in the convenience of using electric vehicles, especially for those who value simplicity and minimalism in daily life. Although the technology is not yet widespread, its implementation by brands like Porsche could stimulate infrastructure development and make electric vehicles even more attractive for mass adoption.
