The ZR1X Squadron and Demon 170 Started Together, But Only One Finished

The Most Powerful Corvette in History vs. The Last Dodge Challenger

In modern drag races, victory depends on power, tires, and pure force. The current Corvette ZR1X uses turbos, a hybrid powertrain, and all-wheel drive for this. If you put the Corvette ZR1X and the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170 side by side, together they produce over 2200 horsepower and more than 1900 lb-ft of torque.

Who is faster? The answer was given by races at Texas 2K

The runs took place early in the morning when the track temperature is lower, but this did not prevent both cars from effectively hooking up with the surface. The result left no doubts.

First run: advantage of power and an unexpected change of leader

In the first run, the raw power of the Dodge Demon 170 comes to the fore. Its 6.2-liter supercharged Hemi V8 engine running on E85 fuel develops 1025 hp and 945 lb-ft of torque. Despite all this power being sent only to the rear wheels, the Dodge launches more decisively than the Corvette ZR1X, whose combined power from the 5.5-liter bi-turbo V8 and front electric motor is 1250 hp.

The Demon 170 pulls ahead by about a car length. However, then the situation changes dramatically: the Corvette begins to catch up to the Challenger, and does so very smoothly and confidently. The Chevrolet crosses the finish line with a result of 8.8 seconds, while the Dodge shows a time of 9.3 seconds.

Let’s take just a moment to bask in the glory that is a hardcore yet factory-built muscle car losing despite running a sub-9.5-second quarter mile. That would’ve been hard to imagine a decade ago.

Second run: a battle of thousandths of a second

The second run turned out to be much more intense. The Dodge jumps ahead at the start again, but this time the Corvette doesn’t lag behind as much. The Chevrolet catches up and overtakes its opponent faster, and the finish difference is only 0.13 seconds: 9.03 versus 9.16 seconds.

Results and context of the performances

Neither car showed the time or speed claimed by the manufacturers at the presentation. However, this only confirms why real-world testing is needed, not laboratory conditions. These races also demonstrate the incredible progress of the automotive industry: cars capable of running a quarter-mile in nine seconds are now available from the showroom, and ordinary drivers can operate them.

These two runs clearly showed the different philosophies of high-performance cars. On one hand, a traditional but extremely refined rear-wheel-drive muscle car with a naturally aspirated engine; on the other, a technological hybrid with all-wheel drive and turbos. The Corvette’s victory in both cases may signal that the future belongs precisely to such a combination of powertrains and drivetrains, even in the world of drag racing. However, the Demon 170, which loses by only thousandths of a second, remains a legend proving the viability of the classic concept. Such duels not only determine the fastest but also shape trends for the next generation of sports cars.
