Teenagers in the state of Tennessee can now lose their driver’s licenses for a full year if they are found guilty of bullying or cyberbullying. Such a law was recently signed, and it provides for serious consequences for those who abuse with their behavior.
However, first-time offenders have a chance to obtain restricted licenses that allow driving only to school, work, or religious institutions. This requires paying $20 and meeting certain requirements. In the future, permission to attend therapy may be added.
“Bullying can cause long-term harm, leading to mental health problems in the future,” stated State Representative Lovell Russell.
Lawmakers hope that this approach will help draw teenagers’ attention to the problem of bullying and prevent its spread. Although the effectiveness of this method will have to be tested in practice, Tennessee is taking a step towards greater accountability for one’s own actions.
This law came in response to the increasing number of bullying cases, which often lead to serious psychological trauma. At the same time, critics believe that license suspension could complicate the lives of teenagers who already need support. It is important that the system not only punishes but also provides opportunities for correction.
