The End of BMW Z4 Production Could Mark the Beginning of Something New

The End of the BMW Z4 Era

BMW Z4 production will end next year, bringing to a close the story of one of the brand’s most iconic sports cars. Despite low sales volumes, the Z4 has won loyal fans thanks to its combination of stylish design, driving pleasure, and everyday comfort.

The Future of BMW Sports Models

The future of the Z4 remains uncertain. Although BMW has not yet confirmed plans for the next generation, one of the company’s executives suggested that the Neue Klasse platform could become the basis for a new sports car.

Joachim Post, a member of the Board of Management for Development at BMW, stated that creating a sports car on this platform is “quite realistic.” He also emphasized the company’s modular approach to development, which allows for the use of shared components across different models.

The Choice Between Electric and ICE

A key question remains the type of powertrain for a potential new model. On one hand, using an electric platform seems like an obvious solution, but Porsche’s experience with developing the next-generation 718 showed limited demand for electric sports cars.

This may force BMW to consider traditional internal combustion engines as a safer option, although developing a low-volume roadster remains challenging from a financial standpoint.

BMW’s modular strategy allows for the rapid implementation of new technologies across various models, which could be a decisive factor for future sports cars. The final decision regarding the Z4 will depend on many factors, including market demand and the project’s economic viability.
