- A bank robber went viral due to his unusual choice of getaway car.
- The thief escaped in a Rolls-Royce Cullinan after stealing just $3,400.
- He rented the luxury SUV for $1,750 a day and is currently on the run.
Typically, bank robbers opt for large, expensive, and powerful all-wheel-drive vehicles for getaways, although the choice of an SUV is completely new to us. But that’s exactly what one criminal did, and the craziest part is that he even paid $1,750 a day to rent it.
Detroit metro resident Dorian Sykes is now wanted by law enforcement after being identified as the suspect in two bank thefts this month, netting him a meager $13,000. The first attack took place at a Credit Union One branch in Sterling Heights on March 6, where, as directed, Sykes fled with $10,169.
Six days later, on March 12, he apparently entered a Chase bank in Lathrup Village, handing the teller a note that clearly stated what was happening.
“Give me all the money, I have a gun, I will kill everyone,” the note read, according to the report.
However, “all the money” turned out to be almost no money at all. The suspect fled with only $3,400—not even enough to cover the rental fee of the getaway car waiting outside.
The Rolls was rented from Sam Zahar of Dream Luxury Car Rental in Southfield, who was unaware of the Cullinan’s criminal path until he recognized it in a social media video. It’s the same rental agency that recently lost a Rolls Ghost during transportation from Florida after a break-in report.
The Cullinan was eventually recovered, although it sustained about $15,000 in damage, but Sykes, identified by the FBI as the attacker, was not apprehended and is still wanted by police.
Renting a very vulnerable $400k luxury SUV to commit a bank heist instead of stealing something more unusual for the job does not seem very smart, but if Sykes is the culprit, it’s not his first time at this. According to reports, he was under surveillance after February when he was convicted in connection with a 2020 bank robbery. At that time, he used a black Mercedes as a getaway car.
