It is not the first time criminals have stolen cars, but they do not decide to steal them directly from a car manufacturer’s assembly line every day. However, this is exactly what happened at the General Motors plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky, where cars are manufactured. And to add a bit more absurdity, it wasn’t a lone affair. No, eight Corvettes were stolen. Although it was initially reported that amongst the stolen cars was a 1,064 hp ZR-1, GM reached out for clarifications that the ZR-1 is not among the stolen Corvettes.
Nevertheless, one would expect GM staff to be especially vigilant with these cars regardless of the configuration. Nonetheless, despite this, a group of thieves managed to take them off the factory premises. In fact, factory workers only noticed a car was missing because the Warren County sheriff called them. An officer saw a Corvette with all the factory floor stickers on it in a residential complex about 14 minutes from the Bowling Green plant. Corvette dealer Mark Thomas shared the incident on Facebook and revealed some details.
When law enforcement approached the factory, it turned out that nobody noticed that not every model they manufactured was present and accounted for on site. Apparently, the sheriff’s office informed the manufacturing facility that one car was missing. It turned out that it wasn’t just one, but eight were stolen! The suspects likely cut through the fence to get the cars out. The thieves took some of the stolen Corvettes to a store near the Lowe’s Home Improvement megastore.
The reason for choosing this destination remains unknown, but at least one keen car enthusiast spotted a red ZR-1 and managed to take some photos. Fortunately, the police were also on site, recovering some of the stolen Corvettes. According to reports, 21-year-old Diante Walker from Westland, Michigan, was arrested in connection with the daring robbery. He is currently charged with receiving stolen property worth $10,000 or more, fleeing from police, and attempting to avoid arrest while law enforcement officers are still searching for his accomplices.
