Mercedes Increases Discounts on the Electric G-Wagen
Mercedes-Benz is offering dealers incentives of up to $9,500 for clients leasing the electric G-Class (G580 with EQ technology). This is $2,000 more than in July, when the maximum discount was $7,500. Additionally, special leasing terms with a reduced annual rate of 4.3% are available.
Experts suggest the company is trying to attract buyers ahead of potential changes to electric vehicle tax credits in September. Although the G580 does not qualify for federal tax credits due to its high price and imported origin, these restrictions do not apply to leasing.
Price and Specifications
Despite significant discounts, the G580 EQ remains a very expensive car with a base price of $162,650. For comparison, the gasoline-powered G550 is $13,000 cheaper but does not come with such incentives. The top-tier G63 AMG ($187,250) is also not part of the promotion.
The electric G-Wagen retains its iconic design and even features a “tank turn” function, but its efficiency is limited by its heavy weight (3,085 kg) and poor aerodynamics. Its range is only 385 km from the 116 kWh battery, although a battery update expected in 2026 could increase this figure by 160 km.
Under current conditions, the monthly payment for a 36-month lease with a mileage of 58,000 km is $1,869, but when factoring in the initial payment of $14,613, the real cost reaches $2,275 per month. This is a fairly high price, but for G-Class enthusiasts who want an electric version, now might be a good time to buy.
Despite all the advantages, the electric G-Wagen remains a niche product for a very wealthy audience. Its technical specifications are not impressive compared to competitors, but the model’s iconic status allows Mercedes to set premium prices. The future battery update may make this model more practical for everyday use.
