DS Automobiles Considers Options for Its New No8 Flagship
The new premium DS No8 crossover, currently offered exclusively with an electric powertrain, may eventually receive alternative options. Brand representatives do not rule out this possibility, considering the instability of the electric vehicle market.
DS Head of Products Cyprien Laurentie stated:
“It’s always a possibility”
when asked about the potential addition of an internal combustion engine to the model. Currently, the No8 offers a choice between a front-wheel-drive version with a single motor (227-242 hp) and an all-wheel-drive version with two motors (345-370 hp).
Platform Flexibility and Market Challenges
Laurentie emphasized the impressive range of 750 km (466 miles), which makes the No8 practical for daily use. However, the brand, which has long been trying to establish itself in the premium segment, is ready to adapt to market conditions.
“We will closely monitor the market and adapt if necessary”
, he added.
Technically, transitioning to a hybrid version would not be difficult, as the No8 is built on the same STLA Medium platform as the Peugeot 3008, which supports various types of powertrains. However, competition from already established premium brands remains a serious challenge for DS.
The question of whether the brand should remain faithful to its electric strategy or expand its offering to include hybrids remains open. Market conditions may force the company to reconsider its plans, especially if demand for electric vehicles continues to fluctuate. DS is demonstrating a readiness for change, which could be the key to success in the competitive premium car segment.
