Why you should not put winter tires only on the driving wheels

Many drivers believe that in front-wheel-drive cars, it is enough to put winter tires only on the driving wheels, claiming that this will suffice for adequate traction with the road. Why you should not put winter tires only on the driving wheels

The Brits from the Youtube channel Tyre Reviews demonstrated why this is not the best idea. For this purpose, they went above the Arctic Circle and took a BMW X1 crossover in front-wheel-drive configuration. The front wheels of the BMW X1 were fitted with winter tires, the rear ones with summer tires. The result is clearly visible in the video — the car skids almost in every turn even at 40 km/h.

The reasons for such vehicle behavior are clear. Winter tires on snow provide 60-70% more grip than summer ones. Yes, it helps during acceleration or braking, but the difference in road grip in turns leads to loss of control, and no ESP can help here. Of course, traction of the driving wheels is more important, but the second axle should not be forgotten. Therefore, winter tires should be fitted on all four wheels.
