Every McLaren P1 is special, but this one sits a rung above the rest. It’s a P1 GT from British specialist Lanzante, built as a tribute to the legendary McLaren F1 GTR Longtail and, by most reckonings, the ultimate iteration of the P1 ever conceived.

Critics might write the whole exercise off as a money grab, and they have a point worth hearing out. After all, the F1 GTR Longtail it honors earned its fame the hard way, starting life as a road car before being upgraded and adapted for endurance racing, then taking overall victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1997. The tribute skips that origin story entirely.

By comparison, the P1 GT is not based on the regular P1, but rather the track-only GTR. While it may not be quite the same technical achievement as the car that inspired it, it is incredibly desirable, and we have little doubt that it’ll sell for a pretty handsome sum when it goes up for auction during next month’s Monterey Car Week, thanks to RM Sotheby’s.
Lanzante is believed to have built just four examples of the P1 GT, each with a distinctive long-tail design unlike the standard car. This unit is number 3 of those built and has a relatively subtle black exterior finish, contrasted with five-spoke silver wheels and plenty of exposed carbon fiber.

As the P1 GT was built around a GTR but conceived for road use, it has some creature comforts the base car doesn’t. These include air conditioning, power windows, a proper infotainment system, carpets, and more comfortable seats. Make no mistake, however, with a 986 hp, twin-turbocharged V8 hybrid powertrain, this car is an absolute monster on a racetrack.
RM Sotheby’s lists the hypercar at 5,484 miles (8,825 km), with a US title and a clean Carfax report to back it up. It won’t ever carry the weight of the F1 GTR Longtail that gave it its name, and it doesn’t need to. Against the rest of the P1 family, this longtail stands on its own.
