Ukrainians Caused Car Price Increase in Lithuania and Border Queues

The preferential period for customs clearance of cars with European plates is coming to an end. If the Verkhovna Rada does not extend it, then from February 23, the 50% discount on excise duty will no longer be valid. As this date approaches, the excitement grows. The State Fiscal Service has already reported over 80,000 customs-cleared ‘Euro-plates’ (as of February 7) and about 5 billion in budget revenue. Of course, not everyone managed to clear customs on cars with European plates imported earlier.

But there are those who want to bring cars from Poland or the Baltic countries at the last minute. Because of this, huge queues have formed at the border checkpoints, stretching 10-15 km long. One of our readers was in one of them and reported that the wait is 30-40 hours to the Polish border and another 5-15 hours on the Ukrainian side. The Yagodyn checkpoint is especially popular, as it accepts cars with European plates without an export declaration. Moreover, Ukrainians have even influenced the car market in the Baltic countries.

In Estonia and Lithuania, all inexpensive used cars priced up to 2000 euros in more or less decent condition have been snapped up. Naturally, sellers there have increased prices, and a car that a few days ago cost 1200 euros is now being sold for 1500. In general, if the preferential period is not extended, then the next week and a half will be very tense, and the queues at the border will grow even longer.
