Chinese Are Snatching Up This $15,000 Electric Car Faster Than Toyota Can Produce It

Toyota’s Success in the Chinese Market

The Toyota bZ3X electric crossover, developed jointly with the Chinese company GAC, is demonstrating impressive sales results in China. Since the start of sales in March, over 20,000 vehicles have been delivered, and the number of orders has exceeded 30,000. This success stands out significantly against the backdrop of an overall sales decline of other global brands, such as Volkswagen or Mercedes.

One of the key reasons for the bZ3X’s popularity is its affordable price. The base SUV variant costs just 109,800 yuan (approximately $15,000), which is significantly cheaper than other Toyota models on the Chinese market. For example, the Camry starts at 171,800 yuan. Even the top-tier 610 Max trim with more power and a 610 km range costs buyers 159,800 yuan.

Technical Features and Other Successful Models

The base bZ3X variant is equipped with a 50 kWh battery, which provides up to 430 km of range according to the local measurement cycle. However, the real-world range is likely around 320 km. More expensive versions with improved specifications are also offered:

Besides the bZ3X, other models from the GAC Toyota joint venture are also selling successfully. In the first half of 2025, 364,218 vehicles were sold, which is 5.6% more than last year. The Camry showed a 66% sales growth in June, and the Sienna minivan grew by 16% over the half-year.

These results indicate that even in the face of stiff competition from Chinese manufacturers, traditional automakers can find effective strategies. The combination of an affordable price, local production, and adaptation to local preferences allows Toyota to maintain its position in one of the world’s most dynamic markets. It is particularly impressive that the company manages to maintain growth against the backdrop of an overall decline of other international brands in China.
