Tesla drivers sue because Musk associates them with fascists

French Tesla owners sue over reputational damage

A group of electric car owners of Tesla in France has initiated a lawsuit against the company. They claim that the actions of Elon Musk, particularly his public support of political movements, have damaged their reputation. According to them, Tesla cars are now associated with radical views, which contradicts their initial motives for purchase — innovation and environmental friendliness.

“Teslas have turned into political symbols that are perceived as signs of ultra-right movements, which is deeply upsetting to those who bought them solely for their technological advantages,” stated representatives of the GKA law firm.

Sales decline in Europe

This situation is occurring against the backdrop of a significant decline in Tesla sales in Europe. For example, in France in May 2025, the number of cars sold decreased by 36% compared to the same period last year. Norway was an exception, where demand for Tesla, on the contrary, increased.

The company’s investors are concerned that while Musk’s previously charismatic image helped promote the brand, his political statements may now harm the business. Conflicts with politicians, particularly with Donald Trump, have also affected the company’s financial performance, causing a temporary drop in stock prices.

The plaintiffs are trying to terminate their car lease agreements without financial losses, but the process may prove to be complicated. Regardless of the court’s outcome, this story raises questions about the influence of leaders’ personalities on brand image, especially in the era of social media where every word can have global consequences.
