New Version of Subaru BRZ Type RA Released with Improvements for Racing Cars

Limited Series Subaru BRZ Type RA

Recently, Subaru introduced another limited version of the BRZ following the announcement of the Yellow Edition. The new model is named Type RA, which stands for Record Attempt. It is equipped with numerous components from STI, improved suspension, and a modified engine inspired by racing technologies. Production is limited to only 300 units, which will be available exclusively in Japan.

Key Features of the Model

Inspiration and Base Variant

The special version is developed based on the BRZ STI Sport, which corresponds to the American modification BRZ tS. However, the main source of inspiration was the Team SDA Engineering BRZ CNF concept, which competes in the Super Taikyu Series.

Exterior and Design

Externally, the Type RA features a full STI aerodynamic body kit. This includes a front splitter, rear bumper extensions, a sports muffler with larger exhaust pipes, and an optional carbon spoiler. The car is mounted on 18-inch BBS alloy wheels in matte gray or matte bronze. Available body colors are WR Blue Pearl or Crystal White Pearl.

Technical Improvements

The most important changes concern the technical part. The 2.4-liter naturally aspirated FA24 boxer engine received lightweight internal components, including pistons, connecting rods, crankshaft, flywheel, and clutch basket, borrowed from racing models. Subaru does not specify exact changes in power compared to the standard 232 hp, but notes that the updates provide a sensation close to that of a racing car, with less vibration and smoother acceleration.

The model is also equipped with a rear differential with cooling ribs from Cup Car Basic. Additionally, a Shift Assist Function, developed for the Super Taikyu series, has been implemented, which includes Rev Sync for downshifting and Flat Shift for upshifting without releasing the accelerator pedal.

Chassis updates include new ZF shock absorbers at the front and rear, as well as a rear STI rigid strut brace. The braking system is improved thanks to a Brembo kit with ventilated discs and gold-colored calipers.

Price and Availability

The BRZ STI Sport Type RA remains an exclusive for Japan. Production is limited to 200 units of the base version priced at ¥4,972,000 (approximately $32,100) and 100 cars with a rear spoiler at ¥5,478,000 (approximately $35,400). These prices exceed the cost of the regular BRZ STI Sport by ¥1,188,000 ($7,700) and ¥1,694,000 ($10,900) respectively.

Due to the limited quantity, potential buyers must participate in a lottery to obtain the right to purchase. Applications are accepted at Subaru dealers from November 13 to 30. The special version will also be presented at Fuji Speedway during the final round of the ENEOS Super Taikyu Series Empowered by Bridgestone.

This launch underscores Subaru’s strategy of creating exclusive models aimed at enthusiasts. The use of technologies from racing series not only enhances the brand’s prestige but also demonstrates potential for future road cars. The limited availability is likely to maintain high demand among collectors and brand fans.
