A vivid confirmation of the law’s strict application was an incident on Wednesday morning. According to troopers, a 28-year-old driver accelerated his car to 238 kilometers per hour. The circumstances of the arrest are also noteworthy.
Chase on the Interstate Highway
As reported by the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), at approximately 2:55 a.m., a trooper on the westbound lanes of I-4 near Lakeland noticed an Infiniti G37x whose driver was demonstrating aggressive driving behavior. After activating the radar, the officer recorded the car traveling at 162 km/h in a zone with a 112 km/h limit.
The driver turned out to be 28-year-old Alfred Escabar-Hernandez. According to authorities, he continued to accelerate, exceeding the 193 km/h mark, while the trooper kept him in sight.
Race with a Police Mustang
When the trooper and the violator entered Hillsborough County, the Infiniti driver changed lanes and, according to the investigation, accelerated to 238 km/h. That speed might have been enough to outrun many police cars, but not in this case. The vehicle pursuing him was not a marked sedan, but an unmarked Ford Mustang GT.
Thanks to this car’s power, the trooper managed to initiate a stop and arrest Escabar-Hernandez under the “Super Speeder” law. This statute applies to drivers who exceed the speed limit by 80 km/h or more, or are traveling at speeds of 160 km/h and above. The law provides for enhanced penalties, including mandatory court appearance and potential driver’s license suspension.
Police Demonstrate Their Power
FHP took the opportunity to showcase its unmarked Mustang GT, the fact of the arrest, and the law’s effect on social media. This is far from the first case of troopers detaining speed violators since the law came into effect. Moreover, the first arrest under this law occurred just minutes after its official enactment last year.
At the moment, speeding in Florida is perhaps one of the most foolish ways to end up in jail in the southeastern United States.
This case clearly illustrates how the attitude towards speed limit violators has changed in one of America’s states.
