Ford’s New Electric Van Looks Like an Undercover American Police Car

Ford Transforms Electric Explorer into Commercial Van for Europe

Externally, this vehicle may seem like a regular electric Ford Explorer; however, thanks to a series of modifications, it is now classified in Europe as a commercial vehicle and has been named the Explorer Van. Although it may resemble an undercover American police car, its purpose is cargo transportation, similar to the Transit, but on a much smaller scale.

The standard electric version of the Explorer is modified at the Ford Pro Conversion Centre in Dagenham (UK). The main change was the installation of a permanent partition behind the front seats, which allows the vehicle to be classified as commercial transport. This provides buyers, especially corporate clients, with important tax benefits.

Practicality and Additional Options

In addition to the partition, the Ford Explorer Van received a flat floor for maximum space utilization, as well as several hooks and adjustable partitions. For those requiring even greater functionality, a Utility Pack is available, which includes an additional compartment in the front trunk (frunk), a roof rack, seat covers, and a protective mesh for the rear window.

Ford also offers a Commercial Pack for the Explorer Van with a flashing yellow beacon strip, a work table on the rear doors, and warning lights, as well as a Welfare Pack with a first aid kit, an eye wash station, and a hand sanitizer dispenser. One of the most interesting design details remains the simple, dark-painted steel wheels with bright yellow lug nuts.

Technical Specifications and Capabilities

Buyers are offered two different powertrains. The base model is equipped with a rear electric motor producing 282 hp, capable of towing up to 1000 kg. An all-wheel-drive version with 335 hp and a higher maximum trailer weight of 1200 kg is also available. The range of the rear-wheel-drive version is up to 602 km, while the range for the all-wheel-drive model has not yet been announced.

The appearance of the Explorer Van demonstrates Ford’s adaptation to the specifics of the European market, where commercial electric vehicles have clear tax and regulatory advantages. The emphasis on modularity and optional equipment packages allows the company to meet the needs of various business client segments—from courier services to service crews. The success of this model may largely depend on the development of charging infrastructure and the overall dynamics of commercial fleets transitioning to electric power.
