The car was built by the Race Engineering & Development (RED) team as the successor to the famous “Rebel Corvette.” In 1972, it competed at Le Mans with the support of the NART team under the management of Luigi Chinetti.

The crew of Dave Heinz and Bob Johnson finished 15th overall and first in the GT Special class over 5.0 liters. This is only the fourth Corvette ever to finish that race.
