Mercedes Electric C-Class Becomes a New Nightmare for BMW i3

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the fully electric version of the C-Class, one of its most important global models, which will now become a direct competitor to the BMW i3 from the Neue Klasse platform.

Sporty Design and Interior

The new electric C-Class features a more sporty and streamlined design compared to internal combustion engine models, which is expected for a car with a drag coefficient of 0.22 Cd. The manufacturer describes its silhouette as coupe-like, while it looks more expressive and interesting than the larger electric EQE and EQS models.

The front is dominated by a light grille with 1050 individual LED elements, and the front daytime running lights and rear lights, integrated into a black panel, are designed in the form of the signature Mercedes star.

The boldest solutions are implemented in the interior. The available 39.1-inch MBUX Hyperscreen system dominates the dashboard, bringing flagship-level digital equipment into the sports sedan segment. This glass display stretches across the entire width of the cabin.

The interior also offers more luxury than previous generations of the C-Class. The available front seats have massage functions, ventilation, lumbar support adjustment, and integrated 4D sound. Furthermore, a panoramic roof with 162 illuminated stars, whose color changes along with the main ambient lighting, can be ordered.

Performance and Technology

In the starting C400 version, the car received two electric motors with a combined output of 482 hp (360 kW). This allows acceleration from 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 3.9 seconds.

The claimed WLTP range is up to 473 miles (762 km) from a usable 94 kWh battery. At compatible DC fast-charging stations, the car can recover up to 325 km of range in just 10 minutes.

Under the hood (or rather, under the body), the C 400 offers air suspension, adaptive dampers that use Car-to-X data and maps to prepare for road conditions, as well as a rear-axle steering with a turning angle of up to 4.5 degrees. This reduces the turning circle to 11.2 meters.

Software is a central element of the ownership experience, and this model runs on the new MB.OS platform. This provides over-the-air updates, an AI-powered voice assistant with memory, augmented reality navigation, and the optional MB.DRIVE ASSIST PRO system.

Market Strategy

It is worth noting the launch details. The manufacturer states that the market debut will begin in the United States, with other regions joining later depending on local regulatory approvals. This “US first” strategy indicates that the company sees significant opportunities in a market where the choice of premium electric sedans is still limited.

Key details such as the C 400’s price, exact power, weight, and standard equipment, as well as information about the tri-motor AMG version currently under development, remain unknown for now. However, the information presented may already be enough to pause a decision to purchase a BMW i3.

The emergence of the electric C-Class is a logical step in the transformation of one of the brand’s most successful model lines. Mercedes is clearly trying not just to create an “electrified” version, but to rethink the model, focusing on sporty character, luxury, and cutting-edge technology to compete not only with BMW but also with its own larger electric models, which have not achieved the expected success. The success of this model could significantly influence the perception of Mercedes electric sedans in the mass premium segment.
