GWM created an 864-horsepower off-roader combining features of the G-Wagen and Jimny

Updated GWM Tank 700 off-roader

The Chinese automaker Great Wall Motors has unveiled the updated flagship off-roader Tank 700. The new model, which looks like a strange mix of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and Suzuki Jimny with elements of a tuning body kit, has received a powerful updated powertrain.

The car, which has been on sale in China for several years, was modernized ahead of the Beijing Auto Show. The updates affected both the design, which became sportier, and the technical components.

Powerful hybrid powertrain

The flagship version of the off-roader is called the Hi4-Z. Its powertrain is a plug-in hybrid and consists of several components:

The total system power is an impressive 864 horsepower, making the Tank 700 almost as powerful as the Lamborghini Temerario, albeit significantly slower.

The hybrid is equipped with a 56 kWh battery pack, which provides an electric-only range of up to 190 kilometers.

Specifications and features

Despite the enormous power, the off-roader’s acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes 5.6 seconds, which roughly corresponds to the performance of a conventional hot hatchback with an internal combustion engine. Fuel consumption in hybrid mode is only 1.16 l/100 km, and with a depleted battery – 8.45 l/100 km.

In addition to the powerful hybrid version, the manufacturer also presented a more off-road-oriented modification, the Hi4-T. It is equipped with a 3.0-liter gasoline V6 producing 355 hp and a 174 hp electric motor, working through a 9-speed automatic transmission.

This version received a smaller 37.1 kWh battery but compensates for it with the presence of locking differentials at the front, center, and rear, significantly improving its off-road capability.

The emergence of models like the Tank 700, which combine aggressive design, technological solutions, and high power figures, clearly demonstrates the ambitions of Chinese automakers in the global market. They are increasingly offering an alternative to traditional European and American off-roaders, focusing on electrification and high equipment levels at a competitive price. The success of such models will depend not only on technical characteristics but also on durability, build quality, and building consumer trust outside the home market.
