China gets AUDI E7X with 671 hp and 59-inch screen, while America gets Q7

Audi unveiled the new E7X crossover at the Beijing Auto Show

After last year’s preview, AUDI officially introduced the E7X model at the Auto China exhibition in Beijing. This is the brand’s second model without the four rings after the E5 Sportback and the manufacturer’s first step into the crossover segment.

Created in collaboration with SAIC, the E7X follows the styling of the E5 Sportback and features a streamlined front end with a “black loop that wraps around the body.” It is complemented by a fully enclosed radiator grille with a light frame that remains “elegantly unobtrusive when not activated.” When switched on, over 1000 triangular lights come to life.

The model is also equipped with slim daytime running lights and vertical digital matrix LED headlights. These are joined by digital side mirrors, frameless doors, and a sloping windshield that smoothly transitions into a descending roofline. Other features include flush door handles, aerodynamically optimized wheels, and an oval frame for the rear taillights.

Dimensions and size

In terms of dimensions, the E7X has a length of 198.8 inches (5,049 mm), a width of 78.6 inches (1,997 mm), and a height of 67.3 inches (1,710 mm) with a wheelbase of 120.5 inches (3,060 mm). This means the crossover is slightly shorter than the Q7 but has an additional 2.6 inches (66 mm) between the axles.

Minimalist but high-tech interior

Inside, the driver is greeted by a flat-bottom steering wheel and a full-width 4K panoramic display. It measures 59 inches and shows video from the camera mirrors on the outer edges.

While technology takes center stage, AUDI has not forgotten luxury: the model features Nappa leather and premium wood trim. These are complemented by rail-style door inserts, ambient lighting, and a premium Bose audio system with up to 26 speakers. Above, there is a panoramic roof divided into two sections with smart dimming technology, offering several levels of transparency.

The E7X is offered in four- and five-seat configurations. The former is the main highlight, as it features two separate rear seats with a zero-gravity effect that recline up to 120 degrees and offer 16-point massage, as well as a pneumatic adjustment system with 23 air cushions. They are complemented by four-way adaptive headrests and an integrated electric footrest.

The seats are separated by an elegant console featuring a built-in display and storage compartment. Additionally, there is a compartment in the rear of the front center console for heating/cooling drinks and other items.

Furthermore, there is a 21.4-inch entertainment system for rear passengers that lowers from the ceiling. It can be controlled by voice, remote, or touch screen.

Regarding technology, there is the AUDI Assistant 2.0. This is an “AI in-car assistant that goes far beyond voice control.” Developed together with ByteDance, the assistant “manages vehicle functions, answers navigation and range queries, plays music, and engages in open conversations on virtually any topic.”

Two powertrains and fast charging

The E7X is built on the Advanced Digitized Platform and features a 900-volt electrical architecture, allowing the battery to charge from 10% to 80% in just 13 minutes. Buyers will also find battery packs with capacities of 100 and 109 kWh, providing a CLTC range of over 466 miles (750 km).

AUDI has released only a few technical specifications but confirmed there will be a rear-wheel-drive version with a motor producing 402 hp (300 kW / 408 hp) and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque.

Customers can also choose an all-wheel-drive crossover that boasts 671 hp (500 kW / 680 hp) and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque. This version can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (0-100 km/h) in just 3.9 seconds.

Rounding out the list of features are rear-axle steering and the AUDI 360 Driving Assist system based on LiDAR. The latter was developed jointly with Momenta and “adapted specifically for China’s complex road conditions and unique driving scenarios.”

The new E7X marks an important step for AUDI in the Chinese market, demonstrating the brand’s commitment to electrification and localization. The collaboration with SAIC allows for faster adaptation of technology and design to local preferences, which is especially important in the face of fierce competition from local EV manufacturers. Impressive features such as a range of over 750 km and ultra-fast charging make the model competitive, but the key success factors will be the price and Chinese consumers’ perception of a brand without the traditional Audi rings.
