Ford Built a Record-Breaking Drag Racing Car That Nobody Ordered

New Electric Monster from Ford: Mustang Cobra Jet 2200

Ford continues to amaze the world with its electric projects. After creating cars like the SuperVan 4.2, F-150 Lightning SuperTruck, and Super Mustang Mach-E, engineers have unveiled a new development focused exclusively on setting records on the drag strip.

The new model is called the Mustang Cobra Jet 2200. This is the third fully electric Cobra Jet built by Ford. The first was the 1400 in 2021, followed by the 1800 in 2023. As you might guess from the name, the new Mustang Cobra Jet 2200 delivers an incredible 2,200 horsepower. This figure significantly surpasses even hypercars like the Rimac Nevera and Pininfarina Battista.

Technical Specifications and Innovations

The Cobra Jet 2200 is driven by two electric motors. Each is capable of producing about 1,200 horsepower, while weighing approximately half as much as the motors installed in the Cobra Jet 1800 just three years ago.

Despite being an electric vehicle, the Cobra Jet 2200 uses a centrifugal clutch for controlled torque delivery at launch. The car is also equipped with a two-speed transmission. The battery is located in the pan, with two additional battery packs at the rear. There is also a battery at the front that can be moved to adjust weight distribution depending on track conditions.

Record-Breaking Performance

What is particularly impressive is that the Cobra Jet 2200 not only has significantly more power than its predecessor but also weighs about 1,100 pounds (499 kg) less. Its curb weight is approximately 3,325 pounds (1,500 kg). According to Ford, thanks to the combination of immense power, traction, transmission, and relatively low weight, the Cobra Jet 2200 covers a quarter mile in just 6.76 seconds, reaching 222 miles per hour.

Last weekend, Ford Racing presented the car at the NHRA 4-Wide Nationals in Charlotte, where it made several runs with times under 7 seconds. The team quickly set a new world record for electric vehicles, clocking a time of 6.87 seconds at a speed of 221 miles per hour. In the next run, the record was improved to 6.81 seconds.

This achievement demonstrates how far electric powertrain technology has advanced in the world of drag racing. Ford is not just building powerful cars, but is also actively working on weight reduction and improving torque management systems, allowing for such impressive results. With each new generation of Cobra Jet, the company proves that electric dragsters can compete with the best gasoline-powered counterparts, setting new standards for speed and efficiency.
